7 Mistakes You’re Making with Small Business Growth (and How to Fix Them)

7 Mistakes You’re Making with Small Business Growth (and How to Fix Them)

Listen, I know the feeling. You’ve got the vision, you’ve got the drive, and you’re ready to take your business to the next level. But somewhere between the late-night brainstorming and the daily grind, things start to feel… heavy. You’re working harder than ever, yet the growth you’re chasing feels like it’s just out of reach.

I’ve been in those shoes, balancing the roles of educator, coach, and CEO. I’ve learned that growth isn’t just about working more hours; it’s about working with purpose, passion, and performance. If you feel like you’re hitting a wall, it’s usually because of a few common pitfalls that catch even the most seasoned entrepreneurs off guard.

This is no dress-rehearsal: it’s real. If you want to scale without losing your mind (or your money), we need to address these seven mistakes head-on. Let’s get you unstuck.

1. Growing Without a Strategic Map

The biggest mistake I see is "hope-based" growth. You hope more customers show up, you hope the revenue covers the new expenses, and you hope you have enough time to manage it all. A wish is not a strategy.

When you grow without a plan, you aren't scaling; you’re just inviting chaos. You need to know exactly where your next dollar is coming from and where every cent is going.

How to Fix It:
You need to sit down and map out your next six to twelve months. What are your specific revenue goals? What infrastructure do you need to support that? If you’re struggling to build that roadmap, my Business Beast Coaching Program is designed specifically to help you handle everything from entity formation to bookkeeping, ensuring your foundation is rock solid before you build higher.

2. Ignoring Your Mindset (The CEO Block)

Your business will only grow as much as you do. If you have a "small business" mindset, you will stay a small business. Many entrepreneurs allow fear, imposter syndrome, or old money habits to dictate their growth decisions.

I always say: Change your thinking, change your outcome. If you don't believe you deserve the six-figure contract or the expansion, you will subconsciously self-sabotage the opportunity when it arrives.

How to Fix It:
Invest in yourself as much as you invest in your inventory. Mindset coaching is the secret sauce to handling the pressure of growth. I’ve documented exactly how to shift your perspective in my book, Change Your Outcome, Change Your Thinking. Read it, internalize it, and watch how your business responds to a more confident version of YOU.

3. Mismanaging Cash Flow and Expenses

Growth costs money. Often, you have to spend on marketing, new hires, or equipment before the new revenue hits your bank account. If you don't have a handle on your numbers, a "growth spurt" can actually put you out of business.

Mistaking revenue for profit is a fatal error. You can make $10,000 a month, but if it costs you $11,000 to run the shop, you aren't growing: you’re sinking.

How to Fix It:

  • Audit your spending: Look for "vampire" expenses that are sucking your accounts dry.
  • Learn the basics: You don't need to be an accountant, but you must be financially literate.
  • Get help: Check out our Mastering Expense Reduction Course to find hidden money in your current operations that can be reinvested into your growth.

4. Trying to Be a "Solo-Beast"

I get it: you’re a multi-hyphenate. You can do the marketing, the sales, the fulfillment, and the janitorial work. But just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should. Trying to do everything alone makes you the bottleneck of your own company. You are only one person, and you have a finite amount of energy.

When you refuse to delegate, you aren't being a hero; you're being a hurdle.

How to Fix It:
Identify the tasks that are "below your pay grade" as a CEO and find ways to delegate them. Surround yourself with a community of like-minded professionals who can offer support and insight. Whether it’s hiring a virtual assistant or joining a collaborative workshop, you need to step out of the "doer" role and into the "leader" role. Experience the benefits of shared wisdom: it’s how the pros scale.

5. Neglecting Systems and Processes

What works for 10 customers will break at 100. If your business relies on you remembering to send an email or manually tracking every invoice in a notebook, you aren't ready for growth.

Scaling a business without systems is like trying to build a skyscraper on sand. It might look good for a minute, but the first storm will knock it down.

How to Fix It:
Automate where you can. Use project management tools, automated email sequences, and professional bookkeeping software. If you're in the beauty or service industry, you need specific tools tailored to your niche. Our Business Mastery for the Beauty Industry Professional covers exactly how to set up these systems so your business can run even when you aren't in the building.

6. Lacking Real Accountability

It’s easy to make excuses when you’re the boss. "I’ll start that marketing campaign next week," or "I don't really need to check the books today." Without someone to call you out on your stuff, you’ll stay comfortable. And let me tell you, comfort is the enemy of growth.

How to Fix It:
You need a coach or a mentor who isn't afraid to ask the hard questions. You need someone who will hold your feet to the fire and ensure you're actually doing the work you said you’d do. Accountability is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.

7. Losing Focus on the "Why"

In the rush to scale, it’s easy to start chasing numbers instead of your mission. You start taking on clients that don't fit your vibe, or you launch products that don't align with your core values just because you think they’ll sell. This leads to burnout and a brand that feels "empty."

How to Fix It:
Reconnect with your purpose. Why did you start this? Who are you truly meant to serve? When you lead with integrity and community, the growth follows naturally. Wear your values on your sleeve, literally. Sometimes putting on The Faith Affirmation Tee or The Worthy V-Neck is the simple reminder you need to stay grounded in your power while you build your empire.

The Path Forward: Push Your Boundaries

Growth is uncomfortable. It requires you to invite possibility and face your fears daily. But you don't have to do it in the dark.
